Why do I need a survey and how often is it required?
A Condition and Valuation survey is a standard requirement across the marine insurance industry to ascertain a vessel’s value and seaworthiness. Different companies have different limits as to when they will start requiring a C&V Survey, but the average is at 10 years of age and every 5 years thereafter. Some companies have a stricter survey schedule on wood hulls. Your insurance company also has an interest in how your vessel is maintained and will expect a written response to any recommendations the surveyor makes. A qualified marine surveyor should belong to either NAMS (National Association of Marine Surveyors) or SAMS (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors).
